Mahmoud was born in El Fasher, North Darfur where he worked as a middle school teacher. He received a scholarship to study Journalism at a Saudi university and then then earned his Ph.D. in the United States.

The professor is now married to his graduate school sweetheart. They live with their two children in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
